Garage Door Tips
Whether you are adding on a garage or just replacing an already exisiting
garage door, try to remember these few tips to save yourself money and
frustration with your garage door in the future.
-
Garage doors come in two forms, either a tilt-up door, or a sectioned
roll-up door. Generally, the sectional roll-up door is more common and
practical. It slides up and down on rollers, and allows for much more space
in the garage, while being convenient to open and close. The tilt-up door is
a single pane door that needs to be pulled out and slid into place. This
usually will take more effort, time and space. Discuss what would be the
best fit with your contractor.
-
Most often garage doors are made from either wood or steel. A wood garage
door is cheaper and perhaps more aesthically pleasing, but can be vulnerable
to wear and tear from the climate. If the weather is very hot or cold the
result could be a warped garage door, which leads to a host of problems.
Steel doors are more money usually, but they are more durable and hold up
better in rough weather conditions and are more energy efficient.
-
If you have a steel garage door, or a door that is on steel
runners, make sure they have been properly treated for rust.
-
Be sure to keep up maintenance of the door once installed. Garage doors take
a beating as they face the weather conditions and are used
frequently. If not kept in good shape, it can and will
breakdown.

Garage Doors Considerations
By Arturo Ronzon
The garage door is an integral part of the design, architecture and security of your home, and plays a huge part of the overall appearance of your house. It is the largest door in the house yet many people tend to use it as the main exit and entrance to their homes; and no matter what you use your garage for, your garage door is one of the most important visual features of your home, representing up to a third or even more of the front.
The garage door is the single largest moving part in your home, and should be inspected and maintained every year, and because of the large number of small parts, its installation is highly technical, because they tend to be a very large, moving part, it's prone to fall out of adjustment with daily use, and let us not forget that it is usually the heaviest moving item in a house, sometimes weighing up to 400 pounds.
But sometimes, your garage door is not working the way it should, to maintain your garage door in good shape, make sure it is well-lubricated and operating properly; a crucial consideration because it is probably opened and closed at least several times a day, every day of the year, remember to check the springs for breaks or rust, because most of the weight of a garage door is supported by the door springs.
A door is balanced when it stays in any point of travel while being supported solely by its springs, to balance and adjust a garage door, you will need professional help because it could be dangerous for the non-expert, if the door is not properly balanced, you might need as well a professionally trained service person to replace the springs as they are under very high tension.
Automatic garage doors are no longer a convenience for only a few, the new generation of garage door is reasonably priced, safe and simple to install, the marginal cost of a rated garage door is only $200 to $300 over a door without wind-resistant features.

Garage Door Openers Necessity in the Home
By Jason Montag
Most of us cannot remember the days when you had to open your garage door by hand. I barely do but that does not mean that I appreciate the automatic ones any less. I have lived in a place that had a manual garage door and let me tell you that it is a nightmare. It is bad enough just having to do it when the weather is nice but imagine doing it in the freezing cold winter of the rain for that matter. In my opinion having an automatic door is a necessity.
Before shopping for an automatic garage door consider what you need. The last thing you want to happen is for you to go through the hassle of searching for and buying an opener only to install it and find it does not work properly. This can happen. The openers have different strength motors that are made for certain sizes and weights of doors. Before plunking down cash for yours make sure that you know what type of door you have and what the requirements it has for a lifting motor. After knowing your door make sure that you know what the opener is rated for. This is often overlooked but it is easy since the box or the manual will tell you exactly what type of door it is meant for. The right tool for the job is the best one.
The easiest way to make sure that you get only what you need and have no back breaking work is to hire a company to do the work. This does not mean that you have no hand in the matter since the company may not be the best in the business. The less you want to be involved the better you must research the company you want to hire. Regardless of the people you hire to do the job, you should do the research on openers too. When they present you with the product they recommend you should be knowledgeable enough to know if they are right or if they quote you a fair cost.
Garage door openers are a serious thing and as with all serious things learning is your best bet. Know what you have and know what you need whether you will be buying it and putting it in or not.
